Abbey The 4 Of Us 1

The 4 Of Us have been a steadfast part of Irish music history for over a quarter of a century. • The 4 Of Us shot to early fame towards the end of 1989 with their debut Songs for the Tempted, which featured the massive hits Mary and Drag My Bad Name Down. The follow up Man Alive made Q magazine's prestigious Top 50 Albums of 1992 and included the UK Top 30 song She Hits Me. The 4 Of Us were recently listed No.7 in TV3's 'Top 10 Best Irish Bands Of All Time', and to date, the Murphy brothers have notched up an enviable catalogue of timeless songs, including six top 20 Irish charting albums. Their music has also been featured extensively on American, UK, and Irish TV soundtracks. Sugar Island, the latest album by The 4 Of Us, explores the brothers' early years growing up in Northern Ireland; musically, it focuses on the trademark interplay of their acoustic guitars. Sugar Island features 12 new songs. It is arguably their most biographical album, including tracks reflecting on the brothers’ childhood, growing up in a border town during the height of the troubles in Northern Ireland.

Saturday 28th December ~ Don Baker Solo Christmas Show

Abbey DonBakerBand Crop 374x336

Born and bred in Dublin, Don Baker first learnt to play harmonica as a young lad in hospital recovering from a bout of TB. While convalescing, unable to go out like the other boys of his age, he immersed himself in The Blues and most especially Blues Harmonica listening to the recordings Sonny Boy Williamson and Howlin’ Wolf. Fifty years on and Don is still immersed, still listening, still performing to the songs of Blues legends and adding to the Blues canon with songs and compositions of his own as he developed his talent from musician to gifted songwriter in his own right.

  • Indeed his songs have been recorded by scores of other artists including Sinead O’Connor, Charlie McCoy, Finbar Furey, Declan O’Rourke and LiamO’Maonlaoi. He has released fifteen albums and shared stages with Tom Jones, Sinead O’Connor and Van Morrison.

As an actor Don played opposite three-time Oscar Winner Daniel Day-Lewis in “In the Name of the Father” and in “Mia, Liebe meines Lebens” opposite Claudia Cardinale, while on television he portrayed gangster Thomas Flynn in RTÉ’s “Fair City”.But it is while performing on stage, back immersed in The Blues that Bono’s favourite harmonica player really comes to life. Don is first and foremost a true entertainer.

    *** WHAT OTHERS SAY ***

As Bono was about to play harmonica at U2 stadium gig in the USA he paused and said, “The greatest harmonica player in the world lives in Dublin and his name is Don Baker.” Bono

“You can hear Don’s hand on the guitar, the feeling coming from his voice. He’s a brilliant performer and what a great songwriter.”
    Finbar FureyIrish Times 2014

“A world-class musician, a talented actor and a sound bloke.”

Thursday 6th February ~ Des Bishop Mia Mamma

Abbey Mama Mia Mobile

Des Bishop - Mia Mamma - I am often asked “where do you get your material from?” The truth is really that I try to see the funny in everything. My mother died in March 2019 and of course it was sad and grief can be tough sometimes but I saw a lot of funny in that too. Since death comes to us all and grief is something most of us will experience I thought there must be plenty of people who would like that funny to be shared. Also I did a show about my Dad being sick back in 2010 and I couldn’t face my mother in the afterlife because I know her first question would be “your Father got a show, how come I didn’t get one?”

  • I think it’s tougher to lose your mum. My Dad was best supporting actor. My mother was the actress in a leading role. You are never ready when the star of the show dies. So this is a show about My mother. It’s a show about motherhood and sacrifice, anxiety and grief, the mistakes you make as a mother and a son and the hard road to forgiveness and finally it’s about loss, grief and the chaos that surrounds it.

Where do I get my material from?

    Life and death!
